Where are the old schoolhouses? There are more than 170 common (elementary mostly one room school buildings) remaining in Cattaraugus County. We would like to compile them into a brochure to make them accessible to everyone; however, many are now private residences.
Few High Schools. Before World War I, there were not many high schools in the state. Most students took classes only in one-room schools and then stopped. Those who wanted to continue took an examination to see if they were ready for high school. The test was often given in the county seat and took a full day.
The One-Room Schoolhouse Center website was created in 1998 as a way to provide an online resource for those interested in learning more about early education in the United States. The history and reminiscences from those who taught and attended one-room schoolhouses are prevalent throughout the site.
Better trained teachers in Illinois are needed for the 10,000 one-room schools…It is believed that the field of teaching in the rural school offers the greatest opportunity to render service." The two-year diploma for one-room schoolhouse teachers required 68 credit hours.
I know of another one room Texas school house in existence. It is in Culberson county, north of Van Horn. I know it exists, because it was my childhood school house and my teachers have now converted it into their home. It sits at the base of the Guadalupe Mtns.
